Everyone’s a Winner!

Posted: Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011

We wrapped up Project Volcano just before the holidays and we’re in the process of reaching out to the official contest winners to let them know that they’ve won.  We’ll announce the results after we’ve contacted and confirmed each winner.

Project Volcano aside, every Savi Developer is a winner to us.  And it’s now easier than ever to become a Savi Developer (for free!!!).

ProgrammableWeb, one of the best references online for Web Service APIs, just added Savi Web Services to their API Directory.  You can see it here: http://www.programmableweb.com/api/savi.  We’re proud to see our API up there with some of the biggest names in the Cloud Computing / Web Service / Mashup world, including Google Maps, Facebook Social Graph, and PayPal Online Payments.

But it gets even better than that.  If you want to get your hands dirty and start building something with the Savi API you can dive in with our free online tutorial.  We have a text version here, and a video version here, and one Savi Developer was even kind enough to post a PHP SOAP client for Savi Web Services tutorial here (Thanks Joe).

So sit back, grab a can of Red Bull, and start coding.

Fitting RFID to the Business

Fitting RFID to the Business

Earlier this year, I wrote here about the importance of taking an operational “process approach” when designing the best type of Auto ID solution for managing assets.  Whether it’s passive or active RFID or GPS – or a combination of wireless devices – the underlying business application and processes must be understood beforehand.  Otherwise, the implementation just becomes another science experiment.

Here, I want to focus more on how RFID and Auto ID solutions must adapt to each business area’s processes even if they seem to be the same across government and commercial enterprises.  We have discovered over more than two decades of providing Auto ID solutions for supply chain and asset management that wireless solutions must fit the existing process – not the other way around. Where Are Your Papers?

Messy DeskIn our excitement to get the Savi Developer Program running we’ve been focusing a lot of energy on working directly with Savi Developers. This has led to some great conversations with developers, but none of those conversations have been on the Savi Developer Forum. As a result, there hasn’t been much activity on the forum.

We’re going to start turning that around this month. As a small step, we’ve posted some of our core developer docs to the forum:

Did you realize that 85 percent of the assets required to respond to an emergency involving your agency resides within the private sector?

Posted: Thursday, Sep. 2, 2010

Whether your focus is on transportation and distribution, border control, equipment maintenance, or disaster relief, chances are your agency has made large investments in its supply chain. Because of this dependency on private industry firms and contractors for response capability, it’s critical that civilian agencies are able to effectively manage and maintain continuous visibility into their supply chains.

Agency assets get lost, misrouted or misplaced, resulting in time-consuming and costly delays. Logistics managers often overcompensate by stockpiling assets. How can this be fixed? (more…)
